I am so pleased to have completed the weaving of the Rus kaftan cloth warp. Started back in April, this cloth posed unexpected challenges and new learning opportunities.
The finished woven length is 11 and 2/3 yards. I had hoped to make 12 yards even, but that was not to be as one of the sheds became too narrow to throw even my low profie shuttle through it.
Through out the weaving, I consistantly struggled with maintaining decent selvages. I was able to resolve that issue in the last 1/3 of the warp by adding additional weight to the floating warp on the left, by tweaking the tension on the end feed shuttle and by paying close attention to good technique when winding the pirns so the yarn flowed more smoothly as it came off.
Next steps are cutting the warp off the loom, preparing it for laundering, and then washing. I’m very excited to see the final product.
